ANIPIO is the National Association of Nurses for Prevention of Hospital Infections, active since 1991 and has become a National Scientific Society of Infectious Risk Specialist Nurses (ISRI) in 2015.
It arises from the activity of a community of nurses engaged in the research of prevention and control measures for healthcare-related infections and in the continuous training of healthcare professionals on infectious risk, who recognize themselves in the mission of offering professional and qualified support, based on scientific evidence, to those dedicated to the prevention of infectious risk.
Our team consists of professionals committed to achieving healthcare as free as possible from the burden of infections, and a healthcare system focused on patient safety, infection prevention and quality of care.
The figure of the Infectious Risk Specialist Nurse (ISRI) was established in Italy by the Circolare Ministeriale no. 52 on December 20, 1985 " Fight against hospital infections " and no. 8 on January 30, 1988 " Fight against hospital infections: surveillance ", in which it is introduced the Infection Control Nurse (ICI) professional role.
It was only in 2010 that the Italian competence profile of the Infectious Risk Specialist Nurse (ISRI) was drawn up and a training course was proposed.
Today ISRI is a professional resource present for the protection of collective health. This professional growth led ANIPIO, in 2021, to become part of ESNO, the European Specialist Nurses Organization, a no-profit organization to support communication and cooperation among European organizations of Specialist Nurses. ESNO works to ensure that the European National Authorities invest in specialized professionals and to move towards a recognized European qualification for Specialist Nurses, with defined and standardized roles and responsibilities.
