Matematica e pandemia: Indice R0 e Rt

Gli indici R0 e Rt, balzati in questi mesi agli onori della cronaca, che cosa ci dicono rispetto all’andamento dell’epidemia? L’indice R0 fotografa la situazione nelle primissime fasi della diffusione del virus, prima dell'adozione di misure specifiche volte al suo contenimento.
Rt invece rappresenta il numero medio delle infezioni prodotte da un individuo infetto in seguito all’implementazione di specifiche misure di contenimento dell’infezione, quindi ci fornisce informazioni sull’efficacia ed appropriatezza delle strategie intraprese. Questi indici sono molto utili ma nessun coefficiente è esente da limiti e criticità: forniscono una stima, non una misura.


R0 and Rt values, have certainly hit the headlines in recent months, but what do they tell us about the spread of an epidemic?
R0 photographs the situation at the very beginning of a virus outbreak, such as before the implementation of specific measures aimed at its containment.
Rt, on the other hand, represents the average number of infections produced by an infected individual following the enforcement of specific infection containment measures. Moreover, it provides us with information regarding the effectiveness and suitability of the undertaken strategies.
These indexes are very useful, however no coefficient is free from limits and criticalities: they provide an average, not a measure.
